Virtual Hands-on Soap Carving Workshop at Eastern State Penitentiary
December 19, 2020 11:00 AM
Throughout the penitentiary’s history, people incarcerated at Eastern State made toys, such as doll clothes, chess sets, miniature cutlery, wooden figurines, model ships, and piggy banks. When the prison was operational, Eastern State’s entrance even featured a small store in which the toys and trinkets were displayed and sold. Join Erica Harman, manager, archives and records, for a look at some of these intricate, handmade objects now stored in our archives. Then, try your hand at making your own replica of an Eastern State artifact with an interactive DIY demonstration. Susan Hagen, a sculptor whose work has been displayed at Eastern State, will teach you how to make your own soap carving.
This event is free for all Eastern State Penitentiary members. Reserve free tickets online or call 215-236-5111 x224. Space is limited.
Join us at 11:00 am on the third Saturday of every month for this special members-only program. Not a Member? Join today! Questions? Email ESP at membership@easternstate.org
